Methane And Nox Emissions From Natural Gas Stoves, Cooktops, And Ovens In Residential Homes

(Environmental Science & Technology )This study found that gas stoves emit 0.8-1.3% of the gas they use as unburned methane, resulting in a total of 28.1 gigagrams of methane emissions per year. This has a climate impact equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions from 500,000 cars.

The study also found that more than 75% of methane emissions came from the stove being off and not in use. Without proper ventilation, families can surpass the 1-hour national standard of NO2 (100 ppb) within a few minutes of stove usage, especially in smaller kitchens.
